Corruption: A social evil

Introduction :- Corruption is a serious problem of today's time which not only stops the progress of our country but also shakes the foundation of social justice and democracy. This problem is spread from government offices to private institutions, from education to health services.
It not only stops economic development but also affects the life of the common citizen.
What is corruption?
Corruption means misusing one's position or power for personal gain. It includes taking bribes, giving bribes, procrastinating in work, taking improper decisions etc. It is a social evil that slowly hollows out the society from within.
Status of corruption at the global level
Transparency International releases Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) every year. In this, an attempt is made to assess the countries as to how honestly the government work is done there. India's ranking has been a matter of concern for many years.
While some Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Finland, and New Zealand are considered the least corrup
Psychology of corruption
Corruption is not just about the hunger for money, but is also about a mindset. When people think, “Everyone is doing it, why can’t I?”, then this problem gets more serious. When doing wrong in society is not considered shameful but cleverness, then
corruption becomes a habit.
Role of the young generation
The role of the youth is very important in the fight against corruption:
• Spreading awareness through social media , Inculcating honesty in life , Opposing wrong by becoming a whistleblower ,Electing the right representatives by voting
The future of the country is in the hands of the youth. If they decide that they will not compromise with corruption, then change is possible.
Technology and transparency
Efforts like Digital India and e-governance are proving to be helpful in curbing corruption:
• Online tendering system , RTI (Right to Information) , Digital payments (UPI, NEFT) , Aadhaar and DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer)
When everything is on record, the scope for fraud is reduced.
Main causes of corruption
• Lack of moral values – lack of honesty, dedication and service spirit in society.
Weakness of legal process – delay in punishment or no punishment to corrupt people.
Lack of government monitoring – lack of transparency in the government system.
Political patronage – corruption flourishes due to the collusion of leaders and officers.
Types of corruption
Corruption takes many forms, the main ones being:
• Bribery – Taking or giving undue advantage in exchange for money, gifts or services.
Nepotism – Giving undue advantage to your relatives or acquaintances, such as jobs or contracts.
